Today I’m presenting you with the track That Morning on the Beach by the Canadian composer and piano player Cory Alstad, based just outside Vancouver. I have previously made a Behind the piano post about Cory, which can be found here! Cory has played the piano since the age of six and discovered the music by Olafur Arnalds about two years ago, which inspired him to start writing similar music.
The track That Morning on the Beach was released as a single on the 11th of June, 2021.
Tell us something about your track That Morning on the Beach!
This is definitely my oldest piece; it’s been with me for many years. Believe or not, when I first wrote it, it was upbeat and driving with a bit of a Latin type feel. But in the last couple of years, I envisioned it as a much gentler and quieter piano piece that had a real sadness to it. To me, when I hear the words ‘that morning at the beach’ I automatically assume something bright and happy – and I really love that there’s a contrast between the title and the feel of the song. Obviously, there’s a sad memory from that day at the beach; something occurred that was difficult. There’s a real aching to it and a sense of loneliness. I composed this piece, as I do with all of my music, in my garage where I have a little studio setup.
Thank you for the music Cory!
