Spotted: Michael Emenau – Downstream

Today I’m introducing you to the Canadian composer and piano player Michael Emenau and his track Downstream. Michael has been a full-time musician for the past 30 years. He started out by playing the drums and later studied classical music in college.

After a few years, I left the orchestra to pursue jazz vibraphone, dedicating myself to performing, recording, and touring—a passion I continue to this day.

The track Downstream was released as a single on the 14th of march, but will be part of an album later this year!

Tell us something about your track Downstream!
Composing Downstream felt like a game. I started with a simple, short theme and repeated it, gradually expanding the melody and harmony until it fully emerged. One of the challenges of creating “relaxing” music is keeping the listener engaged without relying on traditional techniques like increasing speed, density, or volume. Functional music—such as background music for reading, studying or yoga—can often sound generic, so I strive to bring a unique character to each piece.

Thanks for this Michael!
