Today I’m presenting you with the track Distance by the British composer and piano player Matthew Thomason from Falmouth, Cornwall. Matthew has been a composer of solo piano, film, theater and contemporary dance for the past ten years.
For the past year, I have been a student of legendary Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk (currently residing in Sweden) who is teaching me the art, philosophy and physical technique of Continuous Music.
The track distance is taken from the EP Digital Repetitions which was released on Jan 28th, 2021.
Tell us something about your track Distance!
Distance was written within the first months of the first national lockdown, when the pangs of isolation and missing human contact were felt most strongly. I was sent a video by a choreographer friend of mine entitled ‘Distance’ where he was moving whilst staring at his own reflection. I really wrote the piece inspired by that moment and my own inner need for human contact. It was originally never intended for this EP as my plan was to only work on electronic music for the EP but it just felt so right and it was written amongst all the other works – it just seemed to cry out to be included and I went with my gut.
