Spotted: Frederik Magle – Dawn (meditation for organ)

Today I’m introducing you to the song Dawn by Frederik Magle. Every now and then I step away from piano music a bit, and this is one of those moment. Frederik sent me this organ piece, and I felt the need to share it with you all because it’s something I haven’t heard before! Relaxation music for (church?) organ! Maybe there’s a new world to discover here!

Al little something about Frederik then! Frederik is a composer, pianist and organist from Denmark. Even though his background is in the classical music, he has made all kind of music; from hiphop with the danish group Suspekt (where his orchestral work was featured) and children’s music.

Dawn has been released as a single, and might be featured on an album that’s planned for 2020.

So, Frederik! Tell us something about this song!
Dawn started its life as a spontaneous improvisation – played and recorded at dawn, while I was alone in an empty church. I had not prepared anything, and what you hear is the first and only take of the piece – its creation. Since then the notes have been written down, and I am planning on publishing the sheet music for it in March.
It’s a very quiet contemplative – meditative –  piece, composed at a time when I had just experienced the sorrow of loosing my mother. She died a few months before I made “Dawn”. It may have a slightly melancholic tone, but its not a sad or depressed piece, on the contrary. At least I think so!

Thank you for sharing this with us Frederik!
