Spotted: Juan María Solare – The Road Not Taken

Today I’m presenting you with a new track by the argentinian piano player and composer Juan María Solare

Since my middle name is María, some people address me as Ms. Solare, which I actually find meaningful: it reminds me of a hostel owner in New York who once said that my male and female energies were perfectly balanced (whatever that may mean).

Juan was born in Buenos Aires in Argentina in a family of music lovers. His mother played the piano, so music came like his “mother tongue”, he expresses it. He laid his hands on the piano for the first time at the age of four or five.

According to my records, I’ve been on stage more than 500 times. That doesn’t necessarily mean 500 full concerts – sometimes just brief public appearances. But still, it’s a lot of ‘flying hours’ in direct contact with audiences.

The track The Road Not Taken was released as a single on the 24th of January, 2025.

Tell us something about your track The Road Not Taken!
In order to become something, you have to NOT become something else. Saying ‘yes’ to one thing means saying ‘no’ to many others. This track is about mourning the myriad of things -the countless paths- we leave behind in order to follow our own. Abandoned roads cause pain, and it’s not wrong that they do.

The music itself is minimalist and meditative, with introspective, calm melodies. The piano sound is rich in resonances. I love that “third dimension” of sound, only the piano has its own “built-in reverb”, the pedal. For me, these resonances evoke remembrance: sounds once played that now persist as lingering vibrations: still present, still shimmering, subtly transformed.

This track was recorded on an actual piano (not a virtual instrument), a Bösendorfer grand piano at the University of Bremen, Germany, using Audio-Technica microphones.

Thank you for sending this in!
