Spotted: Michael Emenau – The Return

Today I’m presenting you with the track The Return by the Canadian composer and piano player Michael Emenau. Michael has been a percussionist and vibraphonist for the past 30 years, performing across jazz, classical, and electronic music. He has recorded on over 250 albums as a mallet percussionist.

Three years ago, he began composing and recording on piano to refresh his creative process, inspired by the music of Nils Frahm and Hania Rani. He was drawn to their unique sense of harmony—sophisticated in approach, yet distinct from the jazz and classical chord structures he was accustomed to.

The track The Return was released as a single on the 27th of march, 2026.

Tell us something about your track The Return!
I was trying to compose a piece thats vacillates between non functional harmony (the main vamp is E9(no 3) to E major) with a more standard middle section to create a longer sense of tension and release.

Thanks for sending this in Michael!
